Jafar Panahi Wins Palme d’Or at Cannes 2025 for ‘It Was Just an Accident’

Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi’s latest work, ‘It Was Just an Accident’, has garnered the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The film, a co-production between Iran, France, and Luxembourg, delves into themes of trauma, revenge, and the quest for justice. It narrates the story of Vahid, a mechanic who believes he has encountered his former torturer and embarks on a journey of retribution, only to grapple with doubts about the man’s identity. Panahi, known for his critical stance against the Iranian regime, directed the film clandestinely without official permission, highlighting ongoing challenges faced by artists in Iran. His presence at Cannes marked a significant return after years of travel restrictions. The festival also recognized other talents: Joachim Trier’s ‘Sentimental Value’ received the Grand Prix; Kleber Mendonça Filho was awarded Best Director for ‘The Secret Agent’, which also earned Wagner Moura the Best Actor accolade; Nadia Melliti won Best Actress for ‘The Little Sister’; and the Dardenne brothers secured Best Screenplay for ‘Young Mothers’.
