Rising Costs of Cinema Tickets in India and Audience Preferences

Cinema ticket prices in India have increased significantly over the past five years, with the average ticket price rising from 91 rupees in 2020 to 134 rupees in 2024, marking a 47% increase. Despite a smaller increase of 3% between 2023 and 2024, cinema footfall has decreased by 6% in the same period. The shift from single-screen theatres to modern multiplexes, which offer more amenities but charge higher prices, is a key factor in rising costs. While some moviegoers find multiplexes expensive, chains like PVR INOX Limited report stable or increasing audiences, attributing attendance to the value provided by comfort, sound, and immersive experiences. Flexible pricing and weekday offers also help attract viewers. Experts note that streaming platforms, which offer affordable subscriptions and convenience, have further affected cinema attendance, particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic. However, both cinema and streaming are seen as complementary rather than mutually exclusive. While nostalgia exists for single-screen theatres, many urban audiences prefer multiplexes for better seating, hygiene, and security. Industry analysts emphasize that ticket pricing must balance affordability with profitability to sustain the quality of cinema facilities. Overall, cinema continues to provide a unique, immersive experience that cannot be fully replicated at home.
