Bette Davis Designed Her Own Iconic Makeup for Baby Jane

In the 1962 film “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?”, Bette Davis personally created and applied her own makeup to achieve the grotesque appearance required for her character, Jane Hudson. Davis insisted on doing the makeup herself because she believed no professional would dare make her look as ghastly as needed, with one artist fearing it could ruin his career. She envisioned Jane as a woman who never washed her face, instead layering makeup over old layers daily. Inspired by older former actresses seen on Hollywood Boulevard, Davis emphasized wrinkles and created a mask-like effect, using heavy Max Factor products, darkened eyes and lips, and a beauty mark reminiscent of Clara Bow. Her approach reflected Jane’s deteriorating mental state throughout the film. Originally intended to be shot in color, Davis convinced the production to use black-and-white to maintain the film’s dark tone. Her self-designed makeup became a defining feature of her performance, earning her an Academy Award nomination. On a limited budget, Davis even drove around Hollywood herself to help capture necessary scenes. Director Robert Aldrich and producers initially hesitated about the extreme makeup, but Davis refused to compromise, demonstrating her creative control and commitment to authenticity.
