John Bishop’s Journey Into Comedy Inspires Bradley Cooper’s Film Is This Thing On?

The Sky News article explores the real-life story behind the new film Is This Thing On?, directed by Bradley Cooper and inspired by comedian John Bishop’s unexpected path into stand-up comedy. Bishop recounts how, during a difficult period in his life in October 2000, he wandered into Manchester’s Frog and Bucket comedy club after separating from his wife. To avoid paying the entry fee, he signed up for an open mic night, a decision that ultimately launched his comedy career. At the time, Bishop was a 34-year-old salesman with no clear intention of becoming a professional comedian, and it would take several years before he felt confident enough to leave his day job.

Bishop explains that stand-up comedy is a meritocracy, where success is determined by audience response and peer support. Encouragement from the comedy community played a key role in his decision to pursue comedy full-time at the age of 40. This personal journey later became the foundation for Is This Thing On?, after Bishop shared his story with actor Will Arnett during a chance meeting in Amsterdam. Along with writer Mark Chappell, they developed the concept, with Bishop stepping back from the script to allow creative freedom.

The film, now set in the United States, follows Alex Novak, a finance professional who stumbles into New York’s comedy scene. Arnett, who plays Alex, describes intentionally performing jokes that failed in front of real audiences to authentically portray the early struggles of stand-up comedy. He recalls one particularly painful performance where the audience responded with complete silence, highlighting how unpredictable comedy can be.

Beyond comedy, the film also addresses themes of divorce, identity, and choosing personal fulfillment. Co-star Laura Dern notes that the story emphasizes the importance of actively choosing happiness and rediscovering passion in life. Is This Thing On? is currently showing in cinemas.
