Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ Premieres to Standing Ovation at Venice Film Festival

Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited adaptation of Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ received an overwhelming response at its world premiere during the Venice Film Festival on August 30, 2025. The Netflix film, which has been a passion project for del Toro since childhood, was met with a 14-minute standing ovation, moving both the director and star Jacob Elordi to tears. The film tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, played by Oscar Isaac, who creates a creature, portrayed by Jacob Elordi, leading to the tragic downfall of both the creator and his creation. Other notable cast members include Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Felix Kammerer. The film’s world premiere was attended by del Toro’s team, along with top Netflix executives like Ted Sarandos and Dan Lin. Del Toro shared that his love for Gothic horror began when he was seven years old, watching James Whale’s ‘Frankenstein.’ The film will have a limited theatrical release on October 17 and a global Netflix release on November 7. The Venice Film Festival runs through September 6, 2025.
