Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs Use New Film to Spotlight UK Homelessness Crisis

Actress Gillian Anderson has voiced growing concern about the rising levels of homelessness in the UK, particularly in light of the country’s ongoing financial instability and potential for recession. Speaking alongside co-star Jason Isaacs, Anderson emphasized how the issue has become increasingly visible since the COVID-19 pandemic. The actors star in ‘The Salt Path’, a new film based on Raynor Winn’s memoir about her and her husband’s journey along the southwest coast of England after losing their home and dealing with a terminal illness diagnosis.

The story follows the couple’s 630-mile trek along the Cornish, Devon, and Dorset coastlines, highlighting how they were failed by the system—from being evicted by court to being denied emergency housing despite serious health concerns. Anderson and Isaacs hope the film prompts a shift in public perception toward homelessness.

Isaacs noted that Winn wanted the film to humanize homeless individuals and encourage people to engage rather than look away. The natural landscape and the coastal path are portrayed as central elements in the film’s narrative, almost as a third character, reflecting the healing and transformative power of nature. ‘The Salt Path’ is scheduled for release in UK cinemas on 30 May 2025.
