Claire Nielson, Renowned Fawlty Towers Actress, Passes Away at 89

Claire Nielson, the acclaimed Scottish actress known for her role as Mrs Hamilton in the iconic BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers, has passed away at the age of 89. She appeared in the memorable Waldorf Salad episode of the show’s second series, acting alongside John Cleese and Bruce Boa. Born in Glasgow in 1937, Nielson developed a passion for acting after watching Swan Lake as a child. Throughout her career, she appeared in numerous television programmes including The Two Ronnies, The Dick Emery Show, Upstairs Downstairs, Scotch and Wry, Taggart, and Monarch of the Glen, as well as the 1971 film Kidnapped alongside Michael Caine and Trevor Howard. A committed single mother for a period of her life, she later married long-term partner Paul Greenwood in 1994, with whom she co-authored a guide on grandparenting. Beyond acting, Nielson was an accomplished painter and writer, publishing a children’s book entitled The House at Strone. She is remembered fondly by fans and colleagues alike, with many paying tribute to her contribution to British comedy and television. Her death was publicly confirmed on 6 May 2026, following her passing on 29 April.
