Jack Shepherd, Renowned English Actor, Passes Away at 85

Jack Shepherd, the acclaimed English actor known for his role as Detective Superintendent Charles Wycliffe in the 1990s ITV drama ‘Wycliffe’, has passed away at the age of 85 following a brief illness. Born in Leeds, Shepherd studied fine art at Newcastle University before training at The Central School for Speech and Drama in London. He enjoyed a prolific career in theatre, television, and film, performing at the National Theatre and Royal Court Theatre and winning an Olivier Award for his role in the stage production of ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ in 1983. He earned a BAFTA nomination in 1977 for his performance as Bill Brand, a Labour MP, in the ITV series of the same name. Shepherd’s television work spanned decades, including roles in ‘Play for Today’, ‘Blind Justice’, ‘Beethoven’, and ‘God on Trial’. He also directed theatre productions, including ‘The Two Gentlemen of Verona’ at Shakespeare’s Globe and Broadway, and was a talented jazz musician. He collaborated frequently with director Bill Bryden and remained active in the arts throughout his life. Shepherd is survived by his wife Ann Scott and their five children: Jan, Jake, Victoria, Catherine, and Ben.
