Daniel MacPherson reflects on the challenges of filming Beast and pushing his limits

Daniel MacPherson has built his career on embracing challenges, often saying yes to roles that push him physically and mentally. From performing daring stunts in shows like Strike Back and Wild Boys to taking on a physically demanding role as an MMA fighter in Beast, he has consistently tested his limits. For Beast, MacPherson trained for two years to convincingly portray a professional fighter, enduring real punches, a broken nose, torn muscles, and a fractured pelvis. The film, co-starring Russell Crowe, tells the story of Patton James, a washed-up fighter who struggles with family responsibilities while seeking one last shot at glory. Director Tyler Atkins moved the story from Buffalo to Port Kembla to give it an authentic Australian feel, emphasising themes of family, personal responsibility, and modern masculinity. Both MacPherson and Atkins highlight the depth beneath the fight movie’s surface, portraying men who balance strength with vulnerability and integrity. Despite multiple production setbacks, including financing issues and the director suffering vertigo, the cast remained committed. MacPherson describes this role as the most challenging and fulfilling performance of his career, demonstrating the physical and emotional sacrifices actors often make for their craft. Beast is set for cinematic release on April 23 and will stream on Stan from May 26.
