Dame Patricia Routledge, the acclaimed British actress best known for her iconic role as the socially ambitious Hyacinth Bucket in the 1990s sitcom ‘Keeping Up Appearances,’ has died at the age of 96. Born Katherine Patricia Routledge in Birkenhead in 1929, she initially planned to become a teacher before pursuing a distinguished stage career. She trained at the Bristol Old Vic and performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, earning a Tony Award for her performance in ‘Darling of the Day’ and being chosen by Leonard Bernstein to star in his musical ‘1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.’ Routledge’s versatility extended to television, where she appeared in works by Alan Bennett and popular series like ‘Z Cars’ and ‘Steptoe and Son.’ Her portrayal of Hyacinth Bucket made her a household name, with the sitcom becoming one of BBC Worldwide’s most exported programmes. Beyond comedy, she starred as the astute detective Hetty Wainthropp and remained committed to the theatre throughout her life. She never married but spoke candidly about two significant relationships in her youth. Routledge was a patron of the Beatrix Potter Society and became a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2017.
