Coolie becomes highest-grossing Tamil film opening despite competition from War 2
The movie ‘Coolie,’ directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and starring Rajinikanth, had a record-breaking opening on its release day. Despite the fierce competition from the Bollywood movie ‘War 2,’ the Tamil action thriller earned ₹65 crore net on Day 1, making it the biggest Tamil film opener. The film saw massive occupancy rates, particularly in Tamil and Telugu markets. While ‘Coolie’ dominated in Tamil screenings, it also performed strongly in its Telugu version, with nearly full theatres. ‘War 2,’ despite its big-budget appeal, earned ₹52.5 crore on its opening day. As of the morning of August 15, ‘Coolie’ has already made ₹2.32 crore on Day 2. Industry analysts predict the film will gross ₹150 crore worldwide, solidifying its place as the highest-grossing Tamil film opener globally. The movie features an ensemble cast, including Nagarjuna Akkineni, Shruthi Haasan, and Upendra, alongside Rajinikanth. While ‘Coolie’ may not match the heights of other Kollywood blockbusters, it has earned positive reviews for its action-packed narrative and thrilling plot.
