Chinese Film Foundation to Use AI to Revitalize Classic Kung Fu Movies for New Audiences

The China Film Foundation has announced a plan to use artificial intelligence (AI) to ‘revitalize’ 100 classic kung fu films, including iconic titles like *Police Story*, *Once Upon a Time in China*, and *Fist of Fury*. These films, originally starring legendary martial artists Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and Bruce Lee, will be reintroduced through new technologies like animation and digital enhancement. A key project involves reinterpreting John Woo’s 1986 film *A Better Tomorrow* using AI to create an animated version that captures Woo’s visual style. The effort, led by the foundation in collaboration with Shanghai Canxing Culture & Media Co., aims to introduce these films to younger audiences globally. While the project is seen as an opportunity to showcase China’s culture and innovate within the entertainment sector, it has sparked concerns, especially in the U.S., where artists fear AI could alter or ‘distort’ the original creative intent of filmmakers. The Directors Guild of America has voiced opposition to AI being used to ‘mutilate’ or change a director’s artistic work. Despite these concerns, the Chinese initiative highlights differing views on AI’s potential, with supporters touting its efficiency and cost-reduction benefits in filmmaking. Additionally, China’s embracing of AI contrasts with the more cautious stance in countries like the U.S., where public trust in AI is lower.
