Upcoming Beatles Biopics Aim to Connect with Gen Z Through Modern Heartthrob Casting
A new cinematic project directed by Sir Sam Mendes will bring The Beatles’ story to the big screen through a unique four-part biopic series, each focused on a different member of the band. The films, set for release in 2028, will star popular young actors often referred to as ‘the internet’s boyfriends’: Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr. The casting is a deliberate strategy to attract younger audiences and reignite interest in the band, drawing on the actors’ existing social media fandoms. Sony and Mendes are betting on this approach to replicate the cultural impact of previous musical biopics and establish an ‘event cinema’ experience. While the project has generated buzz, it faces criticism, especially from Liverpool locals, for overlooking local talent in favor of internationally known stars. Critics also question the long gap before the films’ release and whether these actors can authentically portray the Beatles’ Liverpudlian roots. Despite this, the films have the backing of the Beatles’ estates and full music rights, indicating a major cultural moment in the making. Whether the franchise succeeds will largely depend on its ability to resonate across generations.
