Bridget Jones Honoured with Leicester Square Statue to Celebrate 25 Years of the Film

A statue of the beloved fictional character Bridget Jones will soon be added to London’s Leicester Square as part of the Scenes in the Square trail. The announcement coincides with the 25th anniversary of the release of the first Bridget Jones film, which debuted in 2001. Created by Helen Fielding in 1996 and brought to life by Renée Zellweger, Bridget Jones has become an enduring symbol of British romantic comedy. The new statue will be the first on the trail to represent a rom-com and is set to be unveiled in mid-November.

Scenes in the Square, which began in 2020, celebrates icons of film history with life-sized sculptures. It already features characters such as Harry Potter, Paddington Bear, Mary Poppins, and Batman. The initiative seeks to highlight Leicester Square’s role as the historic heart of British cinema, where the first film premiere was held in 1937. Recent additions to the trail include figures like Chris Washington from ‘Get Out’ and the Iron Throne from ‘Game of Thrones’.

Helen Fielding said she was delighted to see Bridget commemorated as a British icon, while director Michael Morris of the latest film ‘Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy’ remarked that the statue represents a fitting tribute to the character and her deep connection to London. The new installation reinforces Leicester Square’s legacy as both a tourist attraction and a celebration of cinematic culture.
