Box Office Update: ‘Thunderbolts*’ Leads Second Weekend, ‘Sinners’ Surpasses $200 Million Domestically

Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts*’ continues to dominate the North American box office in its second weekend, adding $9 million on Friday alone and surpassing $100 million in domestic gross. The film is expected to reach over $130 million by the weekend’s end, showing a solid 53% drop from its opening weekend, which is a better hold compared to similar Marvel Cinematic Universe entries like ‘Captain America: Brave New World.’ Positioned between ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ and ‘Eternals’ in terms of eight-day earnings, ‘Thunderbolts*’ is projected to have one of the best second-weekend retention rates among MCU films. Despite a hefty $180 million production budget and $100 million in marketing, the film aims to maintain momentum amid increasing summer competition. Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ original feature ‘Sinners’ added $6.5 million on Friday and is set to cross the $200 million domestic mark, making it the second-highest-grossing North American release of 2025 after ‘A Minecraft Movie.’ ‘Sinners’ is expected to continue its strong performance with minimal weekend drops and is poised to enter the top 20 highest-grossing R-rated films in North America. ‘A Minecraft Movie’ remains third with $402 million domestic total and is nearing $900 million worldwide. Other notable releases include ‘The Accountant 2,’ which is trailing behind its predecessor, and new horror entries like ‘Clown in a Cornfield’ and ‘Shadow Force,’ which have opened with modest earnings and mixed audience reception. Overall, the box office landscape shows a mix of strong franchise holdovers and emerging original films making significant impacts.
