Aztec Batman Faces Hernán Cortés in New Animated Movie
Warner Bros. Animation has unveiled the trailer for *Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires*, an upcoming animated movie set in an alternate history where Batman is reimagined as Yohualli Coatl, an Aztec warrior. In this retelling, Coatl’s father is killed by the infamous Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, making Cortés the Aztec Batman’s personal enemy, much like Joe Chill in the original Batman comics. As an adult, Yohualli Coatl dedicates his life to seeking vengeance, taking on the Spanish invaders in a quest for justice. The movie will feature familiar Batman characters in Mesoamerican forms, such as Aztec Catwoman, Aztec Poison Ivy, and Aztec Joker. Notably, the film’s visual style will be influenced by Aztec culture, blending the superhero genre with historical fiction. The film is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Animation and Mexican animation studio Ánima, and it will be released theatrically in Mexico and on HBO Max worldwide starting September 18, 2025.
