Apex Review: Stylish Action Lacks Depth in the Australian Wilderness

Netflix’s latest action thriller, Apex, sees Charlize Theron take on another high-octane survival role, this time navigating the Australian wilderness. The film, directed by Baltasar Kormákur, pits Theron’s character Sasha against a seemingly charming local, Ben, played by Taron Egerton, who soon reveals a darker, menacing side. The plot follows the familiar template of survival dramas: the protagonist faces life-threatening situations and ultimately confronts the antagonist. Despite the spectacular visuals of Wandarra National Park, the movie lacks a real sense of place or depth, treating the Australian landscape more like a glossy backdrop than a living environment. Eric Bana’s early role adds minimal emotional weight, and the supporting characters are caricatures rather than fully developed individuals. Theron delivers a dependable performance, though the role doesn’t challenge her, echoing her past action roles. The film gains some intensity during the chase sequences, but the narrative feels predictable, and the pacing suffers in the final act. While Apex succeeds in delivering slick, adrenaline-fuelled entertainment, it ultimately comes across as stylish but soulless, failing to offer a compelling exploration of the setting or characters.
