Planned Clueless sequel series with Alicia Silverstone dropped by Peacock but may continue elsewhere

A planned sequel series to the 1995 cult film Clueless, starring Alicia Silverstone, is no longer moving forward at the streaming platform Peacock. The project had been in development since 2024 and was expected to see Silverstone reprise her iconic role as Cher Horowitz. Despite this setback, reports indicate that CBS Studios and Paramount are still interested in the series and may attempt to find a new broadcaster or streaming home.

Silverstone had previously expressed enthusiasm for the project, describing it as being in its “baby stages” during an interview in 2024. She emphasised the intention to preserve the charm and spirit of the original film while introducing fresh elements for modern audiences. In addition to starring, she was also attached as an executive producer, alongside original writer-director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence.

The original Clueless film, loosely inspired by Jane Austen’s novel Emma, follows wealthy Californian teenager Cher as she navigates high school life, matchmaking schemes, and personal growth. Over the decades, it has developed a strong cult following, particularly among millennials. The story has previously been adapted into a television series that aired from 1996 to 1999 and a stage musical in London’s West End.

Fan reactions to the sequel announcement had been largely positive, with many expressing excitement online and hopes for the return of additional original cast members such as Stacey Dash. However, some noted that the absence of Brittany Murphy, who died in 2009, would inevitably affect any continuation of the story. Although Peacock has passed on the project, its future remains uncertain as producers explore alternative options.
