‘Rust’ Finally Released, Years After On-Set Tragedy and Legal Battles

The western film ‘Rust,’ which became infamous after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot on set, is finally being released three and a half years later. The tragedy occurred when Alec Baldwin, the film’s star, fired a real bullet from a prop revolver, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. The film’s release comes after several years of lawsuits, criminal trials, and investigations. To honor Hutchins’ memory, the filmmakers have avoided a traditional red-carpet premiere and extensive media interviews. Instead, they premiered the film at a small cinematography festival in Poland and are releasing it in a limited number of theaters and on-demand platforms. A portion of the film’s earnings will be allocated to Hutchins’ husband and son as part of a legal settlement. Director Joel Souza, who was injured during the incident, initially questioned returning to filmmaking but decided to finish ‘Rust’ with the blessing of Hutchins’ family. Souza emphasized that the film’s completion was a collective effort to pay tribute to Hutchins’ work and memory.
