Lee Cronin’s The Mummy explores family horror with a modern twist

Irish director Lee Cronin is bringing a fresh take to the classic Mummy tale with his new horror film, set to release on April 16. Unlike previous big-budget adaptations, this version focuses on the domestic and familial impacts of mummification on ordinary people. The story follows a family whose young daughter, Katie, is discovered alive after being entombed in a sarcophagus for eight years. Her return unleashes a supernatural evil within their New Mexico home. Cronin, known for his films The Hole in the Ground and Evil Dead Rise, emphasises practical effects, such as a hydraulic coffin, over CGI, aiming for visceral horror. The film combines scares with layered storytelling, examining themes of grief, guilt, and family dynamics. The cast includes Irish actor Jack Raynor, Spanish actor Laia Costa, and Mexican star Veronica Falcon, reflecting Cronin’s ambition to merge strong performances with horror. Produced by Jason Blum and James Wan in collaboration with Warner Bros, this iteration distances itself from past Mummy films, offering a grounded yet terrifying experience. Cronin’s approach aligns with contemporary horror trends that blend psychological depth with supernatural elements, similar to films like The Babadook and Get Out, confirming that horror can be both thrilling and meaningful.
