Premium cinema experiences drive ticket prices as attendance declines

Movie ticket prices in the United States have reached unprecedented levels, with some premium screenings costing up to $50 per ticket. The rise in cost reflects the increasing investment by cinema operators in high-end formats such as IMAX and 4DX, which offer enhanced audio and visual experiences. These premium screenings now account for 17% of tickets sold, up from 13% in 2021, indicating that a growing number of consumers are willing to pay more for a superior viewing experience. Notably, when ‘Dune: Part Three’ premiered in December, tickets for special 70 mm formats sold out almost instantly, with some online booking systems crashing due to high demand. In 2025, cinemas spent over $1.5 billion on upgrades, some of which integrated dining experiences alongside the film screenings. Despite these investments, overall attendance has declined significantly, with ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada dropping by 37% from 2019 to 2025. While the average ticket price remains around $16, the trend towards premium experiences shows that the cinema industry is increasingly targeting audiences willing to spend more per visit to enjoy a higher quality experience, even as general patronage continues to fall.
