John Carpenter’s ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ (1986) combines action, fantasy, martial arts, and supernatural elements with a humorous twist. The film’s production was as lively and unconventional as its story. Carpenter initially sought major stars like Clint Eastwood or Jack Nicholson but eventually cast Kurt Russell, leveraging their existing friendship. Russell approached the character Jack Burton as a flawed yet comedic hero inspired by John Wayne. Kim Cattrall played Gracie Law, a role that blended drama and humor and allowed her to escape typecasting. The studio wanted Jackie Chan for Wang Chi, but Dennis Dun took the role after Chan declined. Russell trained rigorously before filming but struggled with the flu during production.
