Auguste ‘Gusti’ Huber (1914-1993) was an Austrian-American stage and film actress renowned for her role as Edith Frank in the 1959 film adaptation of ‘The Diary of Anne Frank.’ Born in Vienna, she trained at the Academy for Music and Representative Art before beginning her career in 1929 at Vienna’s Deutsches Volkstheater. Huber gained prominence in Austrian cinema during the 1930s and 1940s, starring in films like ‘Land der Liebe’ (1937) and ‘Kleiner Mann – ganz gross!’ (1938). Her career faced scrutiny due to her work in Nazi-era Germany, but she later transitioned to Broadway and Hollywood, earning critical acclaim for her portrayal of Anne Frank’s mother. After retiring in 1961, she dedicated herself to educating youth about Holocaust history. Huber’s legacy includes her family’s acting lineage, with her daughter Bibi Besch and granddaughter Samantha Mathis also becoming notable actresses.
